July 9, 2023: The story of my first ever eye-camp
Excitement filled me as I woke up early on the day of the eye-camp, looking forward to a meaningful experience ahead. I quickly got ready and as I looked outside, I noticed it was raining heavily. The roads were filled with water but we still arrived at the location early. I couldn't resist but capture a few pictures before the first patient arrived.
The name of the first patient who came in was Sonibhai and he worked for GSMS ATM security at night. Engaging in a conversation with him was unexpectedly enjoyable as he told me the values he lived by. The values were to always smile, speak nicely, be humble, not be lazy, and lastly to gain knowledge by reading. His cheerful spirit reminded me of my grandfather, who shared similar values and was always smiling.
As more patients arrived, we made our way to the registration desk. Soon a line began to form and more patients started to come in. Some of them told me they got delayed because of the rain. Once registration was over, I offered coffee to the patients and continued to have conversations with them.
The doctor, Dr. Upadhyay demonstrated extraordinary patience, carefully examining each of the patient's eyes. With care and expertise, the doctor prescribed eye-drops, provided glasses, or informed those needing surgery of the necessary steps. Throughout the process, the doctor took the time to explain the differences between the various eye-drops and even showed certain eye conditions to me.
Inspired by the doctor's dedication, I tried to lend a hand wherever possible. Towards the end, I even found myself assisting in calling out the patients' names, feeling more involved in the process. For those requiring surgery, the doctor patiently scheduled it for the following week. Witnessing the doctor's patience left me in awe. Finally, the day concluded with the doctor examining my own cataract and providing his opinion on surgery.
The experience left a lasting impression on me, knowing that even small acts of kindness and assistance can make a significant difference in people's lives. As my Guru always says, "In the Joy of Others, lies our own". I had experienced this joy and it was an amazing day - a day I will always remember.
In this eye-camp, 63 patients were screened and 26 cataract surgeries were performed. Since Dr. Upadhyay was performing the surgeries as a service and not for profit, the average cost of a cataract surgery was $45.
